Spirulina & Chlorella - Facts and Info

Mike Adams provides this free e-book:

Super Foods for Optimum Health, Chlorella & Spirulina

Nutrex-Hawaii Spirulina the blue-green micro algae is a digestible natural source of protein. It is a concentrated, nutrient dense whole food rich in vitamins C, E, B, A and rich in minerals. It is a great source of energy!Consuming spirulina and chlorella provides your body with everything it needs to heal.
Studies have shown that spirulina inhibits viral replication, strengthens cellular and humoral arms of the immune system and causes regression and inhibition of cancers.
Spirulina contains phycocyanin, a potent anti-cancer photochemical. It contains beta-carotene which enhances immune function and stimulates the release of natural killer cells (which directly attack tumor cells) and T-lymphocytes. Food sources include sweet potatoes, eggs, apricots, peaches, chard, spirulina, carrots, and tomatoes. Since the carotenes are not toxic, they can be eaten and supplemented without fear and the general rule is that too much is never enough.” (

Nutrex-Hawaii Spirulina is the best source of gamma linolenic acid – a “good” fat necessary for human brain, heart and other body systems.
Chlorella and Spirulina should be taken each day in the ratio of 2:1 Spirulina:Chlorella.

Remember to eliminate sugar which feeds cancer. Eliminate sugar to starve tumors and bolster you overall immune system with spirulina and chlorella.

From NaturalNews.com:

Spirulina is another one of nature’s most perfect foods.

Spirulina is 65% highly digestible vegetable protein.

This protein is complete, providing all eight essential amino acids in the proper ratios and in a form that is five times easier to digest than meat or soy protein.

These amino acids are isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, treonine, trytophan, and valine.

Additional amino acids needed for the cells to manufacture enzymes, protein, hormones, brain chemicals and other products for metabolism are also contained in spirulina.

These include alanine, arginine, aspartic acid, cystine, glutamic acid, glycine, histidine, proline, serine and tyrosine.

The waters favored by spirulina are so saturated with mineral deposits from ancient soil and mountains that no other plants can live there.

Since spirulina thrives in this alkaline environment, it incorporates and synthesizes many minerals and derivative compounds into its structure.

It is an excellent source of potassium, calcium, zinc, magnesium, manganese, selenium, iron and phosphorus.

As is bee pollen, spirulina is an excellent source of the entire vitamin B complex, and vitamin E.

It contains the yellow/orange pigments from which vitamin A is made, along with substantial amounts of other carotenoids including the powerful antioxidants, zeaxanthin, lutein and astaxanthin, protectors of the eyes and skin.

Spirulina is rich in pigments, without which the synthesis of many of the enzymes necessary for metabolism could not take place.

It is a storehouse of chlorophyll, very similar in structure to the hemoglobin molecule found in human blood cells except it contains magnesium at its core which gives it a green color.

When chlorophyll is ingested with sufficient iron, the magnesium can be displaced to yield a hemoglobin molecule, allowing spirulina to have positive effect on anemia.

Chlorophyll also increases peristaltic action relieving constipation, and normalizes the secretion of digestive acids.

It is soothing to the digestive tract.

Chlorophyll appears to encourage regeneration of liver cells and dilates blood vessels to increase circulation to all organs.

It aids in transmission of nerve impulses that control heart contraction.

Phycocyanin, the bluish pigment, is important for healthy liver function and digestion of amino acids.

Spirulina is 7 percent fat, and most of that is in the form of essential fatty acids, including linoleic, linolenic and arachidonic acid.

These fats are used to produce prostaglandins, the hormonal regulators of blood pressure and capillary resilience, and to aid oxygen transport to the cells.

They are vital to health and also have a positive effect on hair, nails and skin.

What sugar is in spirulina is in the form of rhamnose and glycogen.

It is very low in sodium.

The average 500 mg tablet of spirulina contains only one to two calories.

Spirulina can be bought in tablet or powdered form.

The recommended serving size of spirulina is 3 grams, although you can consume as much as you like.

The powdered form can be bought in sizes up to a pound. *************************

Spirulina & Breast Cancer, HIV, and Other Viruses

Spirulina research shows treatment of breast cancer tumors, HIV virus, and other virusesby Mike Adams www.NaturalNews.com
Interview with Gerry Cysewski, CEO Cyanotech (Nutrex Hawaii Spirulina)

Gerry: Spirulina contains some anti-viral and immune stimulating compounds that we're just learning about.

Mike: Do you have some clinical trials on that yet, or what's the science behind that so far?

Gerry: We don't have any specific clinical trials. There's been some research out of Japan showing that a sulfonated polysaccharide which they've named calcium spirolan inhibits many viruses from invading cells, and this includes herpes and actually the HIV virus.
And there's also been some work out of the University of Mississippi where they have extracted a compound, again a polysaccharide from spirulina, which greatly stimulates the immune system.
Mike: It also reminds me of a study I've mentioned in the past -- I think this was out of Japan as well, where they took the cyan pigmentation from spirulina and injected it into breast cancer tumors and were amazed that those tumors vanished. They were destroyed by this pigment phytochemical.

Gerry: Yes, and there's also been a study in India with a group of people that chewed tobacco quite a bit and eventually developed mouth cancer, and they gave the group spirulina, and I think the remission rate was something like 80% of those folks with pre-cancerous lesions in their mouth if they took spirulina.
The other interesting compound in spirulina that really isn't found anywhere else in the plant kingdom or animal foods is something called phycocyanin.
This is a blue pigment.
That's why spirulina is actually called blue-green algae, because of the phycocyanin blue pigment. And it's a phycobiliprotein and research has shown that it really provides a great deal of protection to both the liver and the kidneys. It's actually an antioxidant pigment or protein pigment.

Mike: I find it so fascinating -- there are so many health-enhancing attributes of these phytonutrients, and yet they are largely unstudied.
There's a whole universe waiting to be explored there. And I'm curious, are there any institutions that are really doing hard research on the health benefits of consuming spirulina?

Gerry: The Japanese have been doing work with another microalgae, chlorella, and I think they are certainly now discovering some of the health benefits and the superior health benefits of spirulina.
And the University of Mississippi has a very good program. It's the National Center for Natural Products Research, and it's in the School of Pharmacy and they actually are looking at some of the natural health benefits of spirulina.

Mike: Obviously, the pharmaceutical companies don't have much interest in looking at the health benefits of spirulina, since that would typically compete with many of their drugs.

Gerry: Well, it certainly would, and they wouldn't have a great deal of patent protection to move forward.

Mike: Indeed. Well, that's an interesting point -- what about your own cultures? Is there any intellectual property involved here, or can competitors grow the same thing you're growing?

Gerry: Well, they certainly can grow spirulina platensis, but our drying process, the Ocean Chill drying process, is a patented process, so they would not be allowed to use that, and also the strain that we have really developed here in Kona after 20-some years of culturing spirulina is unique.
We haven't really determined scientifically if it's a new strain, but we do know that it does contain higher levels of carotenoids than original, it's a little bit larger strain, and so it would take quite some time for somebody to reproduce the type of strain we have developed now here in Kona.

Mike: Now here's an interesting question -- is spirulina something that an individual could somehow grow or harvest in their backyard, and if not, why not?

Gerry: Well, it is something somebody could grow in their backyard, but it would be, first of all, very difficult to get the type of product quality that we can get out here in a large commercial production system. The reason for that is that one of the major ingredients to grow spirulina is baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate. It requires a lot of baking soda, as well as some sources of nitrogen, phosphate and trace minerals. It has to be very carefully balanced and maintained almost on a daily basis. And when it's harvested, it's harvested rather easily through a fine mesh screen, washed extensively, but when you come to the drying system, it's very hard for an individual to have an efficient low-temperature drying system that does not destroy the phytonutrients. Putting spirulina in an oven for instance, even at a low temperature, the amount of time that it takes and the exposure to oxygen during that time really would destroy a lot of the phytonutrients.

Mike: So a person could end up with a powder that looks like spirulina, but nutritionally it's not the same thing at all.

Gerry: That's correct. Now it certainly would have the protein content, which is over 50%, but you wouldn't get some of the subtle phytonutrients which are so very important, like beta carotene, zeaxanthin and alpha carotene.

Mike: Indeed, and I want to emphasize too, to readers, that those nutrients are what I think are the essential benefits of consuming spirulina.

Turmeric and Breast Cancer

Does turmeric have a positive effect on breast cancer?

The experts weigh in:

Andrew Weil,
http://www.drweil.com/drw/u/id/QAA360804

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is the yellow spice most familiar in Indian curries and found in American prepared mustard.
People whose diets are rich in turmeric have lower rates of breast cancer as well as prostate, lung and colon cancers, and recent research at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston suggests that curcumin, an active component in turmeric, may help prevent the spread of breast cancer.
In studies of mice, researchers found that curcumin helped stop the metastasis of breast cancer cells to the lung. Human studies following up on this finding are now in progress.

Edgy advice on breast cancer By Frappa Stout

In her recent book, "Waking the Warrior Goddess: Dr. Christine Horner's Program to Protect Against & Fight Breast Cancer" (Basic Health Publications, $24.95), Horner prescribes prevention. Here are several of her tips for lowering your risk:

Drink green tea. This well-known antioxidant and anti-inflammatory helps prevent breast cancer by decreasing the amount of estrogen a woman's body produces.
(Like cholesterol, estrogen has a good kind and a bad kind -- and an excess of the bad can promote breast cancer.)
According to Horner's reading of the research, green tea also blocks new blood vessels from growing into tumors, and, for women with breast cancer, it enhances the effectiveness of chemotherapy while protecting against organ damage.

"In the presence of green tea," Horner says, "chemotherapy will concentrate inside tumor cells three times more than normal."

Add spice. According to Horner, turmeric, a popular Indian spice in curry dishes, may rid the body of cancer-causing toxins; block the estrogen receptor and COX-2 enzyme, which promotes cancer; and stop the growth of new blood vessels into tumors. "I found 1,300 studies on turmeric alone," she says.
"You can add it to vegetable or rice dishes, and just 1/4 to 1/3 of a teaspoon per day is all you need for tremendous positive effects."
Bonus: Have green tea and turmeric at the same meal. "They enhance each other's effectiveness," Horner says. "Green tea makes the anti-cancer effects of turmeric three times stronger, while turmeric makes green tea eight times stronger."

One Cure for Excessive Burping & Rosacea

The following is from a podcast featuring Elizabeth Lipski, author of Digestive Wellness (http://www.innovativehealing.com/)

Many people take antacids regularly thinking they have too much stomach acid.

The reality is that it is likely that the problem may be too LITTLE stomach acid.

80% of older adults are low in HCL.

Taking antacids regularly is harmful and unnecessary. Taking antacids means you're not getting B12 and not absorbing minerals well. B12 is an oxygen carrier, important to brain function and cell replication. It is essential for our DNA to create new, healthy cells.

Try this experiement to determine if you are lacking stomach acid:

Purchase Betaine HCL from the health food store or Vitacost

(350 - 750 mg/capsule)

Take 1 capsule with a protein meal and wait to see how you feel.

The normal reaction (if you have enough stomach acid) is you will feel like you have heartburn. This means you have enough HCL and don't need to supplement. The experiment is over.

If you feel no different then continue the experiment, increasing to 2 capsules with the next meal. Keep increasing by one capsule until you have some adverse reaction (heartburn, upset stomach etc.). This is one capsule too many, so back down by 1 capsule.

For example, if you didn't feel any adverse effects until you were taking 6 capsules per meal, drop down to taking 5 capsules per meal and continue on this dose for 30 days to see if it makes a difference in your digestion and related health problems.

Dr. Lipski had a patient with rosacea that had tried everything to treat the problem. Dr. Lipski put him on Betaine HCL and within 30 days the rosacea was completely cleared.

Another patient had a burping problem. Every time she ate she experienced a great deal of burping. The Betaine HCL cured the burping problem.

It has even helped arthritis.

The connection with the digestive system and immune system is clear.

Resveratrol – The Wonder Nutrient

Entire Article on the website People Against Cancer

One of the most important nutritional discoveries of modern time is a substance called Resveratrol (rez-ˈvir-É™-ËŒtrȯl).

Research found that resveratrol was

the most powerful antioxidant ever found.

It was also found that the highest levels of Resveratrol could be extracted from the muscadine grape, the skin and the seeds. And it was proven perfectly safe to take as a nutritional supplement.

Cancer kills by spreading. The process is called metastases. If cancer is contained and does not metastasize - it does not kill. More than 90% of the cancer deaths are from cancer which has spread locally, regionally or throughout the body.
Resveratrol may prevent, for example, breast cancer because resveratrol suppresses abnormal cell formation that leads to most types of breast cancer.

Resveratrol – From Wine or From a Nutritional Supplement
While resveratrol was originally found in wine, the best way to get the benefits of resveratrol is not from wine, as alcohol consumption causes myriad health risks. Even two ounces of alcohol per day increases the risk of breast cancer, colorectal cancer, ovarian cancer, liver cancer and cancers of the head and neck.

The best way to consume resveratrol appears to be from the extract of the skins and seeds of the grape itself and the best source appears to the variety of grapes called muscadine which yield the highest levels of resveratrol.
While resveratrol appears to be the most important substance found in the muscadine grape, many health benefits have been found in other plant based substances also found in the muscadine grape.
They include: Ellagic acid, Quercetin, Anthocyanidins, Cyanidin, OPCs (oligomeric procyanidins), Tartaric acid, Caffeic acid, Chlorogenic acid, Peonidin, Cinnamic acid, Delphinidin, Epicatechin, Petunidin, ....

Exercise & Stress Lead to Loss of Sense of Smell?

What would cause a loss of the sense of smell?

One thing could be a zinc deficiency.

What can cause a zinc deficiency?

Sweating and stress.

For about $13 and 3 months, try this experiment - supplement with zinc daily for 90 days, and see if you notice a difference.

***************************

Zinc is an essential nutrient for skin repair and injury repair (it's also really important for prostate health).
If you're deficient in zinc (and probably 70% or more of Americans are), your skin will never look as good as it could.
Zinc gives your cells the ability to properly construct and maintain their physical integrity, and it speeds the regeneration of new skin following injuries such as scrapes, scratches or cuts.
Shellfish and pumpkin seeds are good natural sources of zinc.
It can also be taken as a nutritional supplement.
A high-end source is Wellness Resources' "Strengthener Plus," which also happens to contain MSM, a sulfur derivative that belongs near the top of anyone's list of skin-supporting nutritional supplements.
*************************************************************
http://www.naturalnews.com/023828.html

Research shows that pumpkin seeds are a great libido booster. Pumpkin seeds are one of nature's most perfect foods. They taste delicious, make great snacks, and add nutrient rich flavor and texture to salads and many other dishes. They contain many libido vitamins including the B vitamins, and vitamins E, C, D, and K.

They also contain essential sex drive minerals like calcium, potassium, niacin, and phosphorous.
Most importantly, pumpkin seeds contain high loads of zinc, which is important for preventing testosterone deficiency in men.
As men begin to age, there is a natural decline in zinc.
A zinc deficiency can lead to prostate enlargement, as well as other male sexual health problems including impotency. This is due to the fact that prostate tissues are highly dependent on zinc.Zinc is one of the primary nutrients in sperm production, and increases sperm count and sperm motility. High zinc levels also reduce the risk of prostate disease.
******************************************************************

Zinc: Best taken prior to surgery,

Topical zinc, such as calamine lotion, also inhibits bacteria growth on the surface of skin, helping to prevent infection.

As zinc deficiency is common in the United States, most doctors recommend 30 mg/day, taken orally for four to six weeks, to bring your levels up to par before surgery. If you undergo surgery in a zinc deficient state, your recovery time will be lengthened, so be sure to test and supplement your zinc levels, if necessary, well before any planned surgical procedures.

A good resource for getting a comprehensive blood test that may help highlight nutritional deficiencies is the Life Extension Foundation (http://www.lef.org/)

Number of kids on medication jumps alarmingly
Most of the illnesses related to obesity

By Liz Szabo, USA TODAY

The number of children who take medication for chronic diseases has jumped dramatically, another troubling sign that many of the youngest Americans are struggling with obesity, doctors say.
The number of children who take pills for type 2 diabetes — the kind that's closely linked to obesity — more than doubled from 2002 to 2005, to a rate of six out of 10,000 children. That suggests that at least 23,000 privately insured children in the USA are now taking diabetes medications, according to authors of the new study in today's Pediatrics.

Doctors also saw big increases in prescriptions for high cholesterol, asthma and attention deficit and hyperactivity. There was smaller growth for drugs for depression and high blood pressure.
"We've got a lot of sick children," says author Emily Cox, senior director of research with Express Scripts, which administers drug benefit programs for private insurance plans. "What we've been seeing in adults, we're also now seeing in kids."

Type 2 diabetes was once known as adult-onset. But Cox says her records show kids as young as 5 being treated with prescription diabetes drugs.
Cox based her study on prescription records of nearly 4 million children a year, ages 5 to 19, covered by Express Scripts. She says her findings may not apply to the 40% of children who are uninsured or covered by government health plans.
Unless these children make major changes — such as eating healthier and exercising more — they could be facing a lifetime of illness, Cox says.
"These are not antibiotics that they take for seven to 10 days," Cox says. "These are drugs that many are taking for the rest of their lives."

Cox couldn't explain one surprising finding: Most of the increase in drugs for diabetes, attention deficit/hyperactivity and depression was seen in girls. The gender gap was most striking in diabetes: While the number of boys taking medication grew by 39%, the number of girls using them climbed by 147%, Cox found.
