Neutralize the EM field on Your Cell Phone

Article from Virginia Hopkins Health Watch

Cell Phone Ladybug by Zerofon

For years I’ve been concerned about what my cell phone may be doing to my brain. I know, media reports say that cell phones don’t harm the brain, but there’s enough research to the contrary (that's not reported in the mainstream media) to make me wish I didn’t have that indispensable piece of technology glued to my ear or close to my body quite so much.

About a year ago my cousin gave me what I call a Cell Phone Ladybug, a small, passive device shaped like a ladybug (but about the size of a small lima bean) that attaches to the cell phone to help neutralize the electromagnetic fields. I’ve been researching it and other similar devices for the past year to find out if I could validate their usefulness. The answer? Yes and no. The Cell Phone Ladybugs are made of a special material that essentially neutralizes the magnetic part of a cell phone’s electromagnetic field and reduces the heat that it generates. In other words, the Cell Phone Ladybug doesn’t make the electromagnetic field go away, but changes it in a way that is likely to reduce its potential for harm.

Because we don’t have clinical trials I can’t give you a blanket assurance or guarantee that the Cell Phone Ladybugs will protect you from the electromagnetic fields in cell phones. However, I’m convinced enough that they help that I wouldn’t be without one myself, and now that they’re in stock, am mailing them off to friends and family and offering them for sale on my website.

I like the Cell Phone Ladybugs better than other similar devices because they’re small, they’re fun, and relatively inexpensive.

Here's where to find more information on cell phones and eletromagnetic radiation.

Ideally, devices that minimize cell phone radiation would be built right into the phone, and I’m sure the technology exists to accomplish that. Unfortunately, cell phone companies have not stepped up to the plate to provide us with that protection. Until the cell phone companies take it upon themselves (or the government regulates them) to protect us better from cell phone radiation, I hope you’ll try a Cell Phone Ladybug!

Sincerely,
Virginia Hopkins

How to Prevent Colon Cancer

Virginia Hopkins Health Watch

What Your Doctor May Not Tell You about Colon Cancer - PF
Testing for colon cancer is important, but prevention is the first and best defense.

by John R. Lee, M.D. and Virginia Hopkins

Some years ago, Katie Couric, then co-host of NBC’s Today show, elevated public awareness of colon cancer. Understandably upset by her husband’s death from colon cancer at age 42, she became a powerful advocate for early detection and prevention of the disease. She even had her own colonoscopy broadcast live on the Today show to emphasize the often-heard litany that early diagnosis and timely surgery can cure colon cancer and greatly reduce its death rate. From this, the following syllogism has emerged:

Some 150,000 people per year are diagnosed with colon cancer and 55,000 per year die of it. Colon cancer rates are steadily rising.
Early diagnosis (prior to symptoms) could save 90 percent of them.
Therefore, everybody should undertake early diagnostic screening tests.
If one waits until suggestive symptoms occur (blood in the stool, irregular bowel movements, pain, weight loss), the colon tumor is likely to be advanced, and cure much less likely.

The problem is that the population at risk involves 200,000,000 people, and the best early diagnostic test is by flexible colonoscopy that costs $1,000 per test. Ideally, the test should be performed yearly for best results. The annual cost would be $200,000,000,000 ($200 billion per year). This is, to say the least, a bit unrealistic, which is why the various organizations that create medical standards recommend a colonoscopy at ages 50, 60 and 70.

Obviously what is needed is a better, less intrusive, less expensive screening test for colon cancer. The fecal occult blood test (FOBT) can detect hidden blood in the stool, one of the first symptoms of colon cancer, and they can be done at home once a year, more if you have colon cancer in your family. But by far our best option is prevention. Fortunately, we know a lot about prevention. Diet is probably most important. Let’s take a closer look.

Eating to Prevent Colon Cancer
Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death and the third most common cancer in both sexes in the United States. This form of cancer doesn’t get the media attention that, for example, breast cancer does, but it’s more common and just as deadly. Even when it doesn’t kill, the consequences of bowel surgery can compromise quality of life. It’s worth it to make the simple lifestyle changes that can help prevent this cancer—and will help prevent other cancers, heart disease and diabetes in the process!

In a nutshell: to prevent colon cancer we need to
  • increase our fiber intake,
  • eat a variety of fresh vegetables,
  • maintain good levels of antioxidants, a
  • void processed foods,
  • drink plenty of good water, and
  • get some exercise.

All of these factors have shown up again and again as preventive in studies of colon cancer. Exercise has been shown to prevent colon cancer more than any other cancer.

Fiber Keeps the Colon Clean and Moving
The colon is also known as the large intestine, and it is the last area of the digestive tract that waste matter passes through before elimination. It’s where your body reabsorbs water and minerals for recycling, and where it absorbs vitamin B12, as well as the fat-soluble vitamins A and E. The bacteria in the colon manufacture vitamin K, which plays a role in blood clotting. Fiber is what keeps all of these processes moving along in the bowel.

Fiber refers to the indigestible residue of plants. It consists of complex carbohydrates that we are unable to digest. They encompass a wide variety of molecular structures that differ in their degree of solubility in water. They add to the bulk of bowel contents and stimulate the passage of waste matter through the colon. Shorter transit times (time of ingestion of food until its elimination via defecation) are related to decreased incidence of colon cancer. In other words, constipation increases your risk of colon cancer, and fiber prevents constipation. Drinking plenty of water also helps prevent constipation.

Until the past six or seven generations, humans ate a diet filled with vegetable and grain fiber. With industrialization our diets changed radically: the processing of foods for commercial sale resulted in the loss of much of the fiber, especially of grain foods. Comparing the illnesses occurring in industrialized and non-industrialized populations, it is apparent that many common illnesses rarely occur in less industrialized areas that eat high fiber diets. Such illnesses include diabetes, constipation, diverticulitis, colon cancer, heart disease, obesity, gall bladder disease and gallstones, pancreatitis, hiatus hernia, appendicitis, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, and even breast cancer. There is an unmistakable epidemiologic relationship between these diseases to low dietary fiber.

Fiber reduces the conversion of primary into secondary bile acids, which are potential cancer promoters; it absorbs more bile acids and dilutes them within a larger stool mass, thus protecting against colon cancer. With fiber, the bile itself is more soluble and less likely to form gallstones; similarly, fiber protects against pancreatitis by preventing biliary sludge.

Fiber reduces fat absorption and lowers cholesterol levels. It even helps lower excess estrogen by speeding up transit time, thus reducing the likelihood that estrogen will be recirculated back into the body.

What’s Your Transit Time?
A good way to test your need for more fiber is the bowel transit time test. Bowel transit time is the time it takes for food to travel from ingestion to exit. All you need to do is eat some food that can serve as a marker when it appears in the stool.

Fresh corn on the cob is one such food; we digest the starch within the kernels but not the kernels themselves, which will be visible in the bowel movement when they are passed. Simply eat some corn and watch your bowel movements until you see the kernels. That is your bowel transit time. A healthy transit time is 18 to 24 hours. In the U.S., common bowel transit times are found to be two to three days, a good indicator of the need for more fiber and water in the diet.

Nutrients and Colon Cancer
Fiber isn’t the only thing you eat that affects your colon cancer risk. A deficiency of some nutrients can also predispose one to colon cancer.

Antioxidants protect against all types of cancer and all of the chronic degenerative diseases that plague Western cultures, such as heart disease, arthritis and diabetes. Your first source of antioxidants should be fresh fruits and vegetables. A good multivitamin can give you added protection. The most important antioxidants are vitamin C (take 1,000 mg daily), vitamin E (400 IU daily), and vitamin A (take 5,000 to 10,000 IU daily).

Other types of antioxidants can be found in the bioflavonoids found in fruit, especially berries, and supplements made from grape seed extract, quercetin, and green tea extracts. Again, these types of supplements, as powerful as they can be, are no substitute for eating fresh fruits and vegetables.

The trace minerals zinc (10 to 15 mg daily) and selenium (200 micrograms) daily, are also powerful antioxidants, and are essential to the health of the colon. Studies have repeatedly linked selenium deficiencies to colon cancer. One study showed a 40 percent reduction in new colon cancer cases in populations who took selenium supplements. Onions and garlic are a great source of selenium.

Calcium is another mineral that has been repeatedly shown to have a beneficial effect on the colon. It is thought to help prevent colon cancer by binding with bile salts and fatty acids that can damage the colonic epithelium and enhance cell proliferation. I’m not a big fan of mega-doses of calcium, but 300 mg daily combined with at least 150 mg of magnesium should confer protection for colon cancer. Milk, while it is a good source of calcium, should be avoided by adults since it often causes a chronic inflammation of the gut that potentially increases the risk of cancer. For details, please read my book, Optimal Health Guidelines.

Vitamin D is essential to good colon health, and sunshine is the best place to get your daily dose. Vitamin D is so essential to preventing colon cancer, that the risk of getting it is doubled in those who have the lowest levels. People who can’t get outside much or who live in northern latitudes can take up to 2,000 mg daily, although if you take that much get a vitamin D test after a few months.

Folate (folic acid) is a B vitamin that is well known for preventing birth defects, and I recommend it for preventing and treating cervical dysplasia. The Harvard Nurses’ Study showed that women who supplemented with folate long-term have a significantly reduced risk of colon cancer. A good multivitamin will contain 400 mcg (micrograms) of folic acid.

Probiotics are the beneficial bacteria found in the colon. There are at least 400 species of these “good” bacteria, and hundreds of billions of them live in your large intestine. They keep “bad” bacteria in check, and help process waste as it moves through the large intestine. A lack of probiotics, usually caused by taking antibiotics that indiscriminately kill off good and bad bacteria, can lead to inflammation in the bowels, gas, constipation, and generally poor digestion.
If you take an antibiotic, follow it up with a week of eating yogurt or kefir daily, which contain live cultures of the probiotics (it should say on the container that it contains live cultures), or you can take a probiotic supplement, easily found at your local health food store.

It is difficult to imagine a more cost-effective way of reducing the risk of colon cancer (and degenerative diseases in general) than to return to a high fiber diet and eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. I can think of no better example of the axiom that prevention is far better than treatment.

Partially Hydrogenated Oil & Trans Fat--Same?

Healthy Food Tip from Whfoods.com

Are partially hydrogenated oils and trans fat the same thing?

Partially hydrogenated oil is not the same as trans fat.
The term "partially hydrogenated" means that hydrogen gas has been bubbled up into an oil to increase its degree of saturation and shelf life.
The process of hydrogenation causes several chemical changes to occur in the oil. One of these changes (only one, but an important one) is the creation of trans fat.

There is some naturally occurring trans fat in many foods-but not nearly as much as we get from partially hydrogenated oils.
Some of us get about 20 grams of trans fat per day solely from consumption of these oils.
From natural foods, we would only get a few grams.
A food label can claim "Zero grams of trans fat" even when there is partially hydrogenated oil in the product, because a product is legally considered "trans fat free" as long as there is less than 0.5 grams of trans fat per serving size.

Trans fats are definitely harmful to our health in large amounts, and processed products containing hydrogenated oils are not ones that I recommend consuming.

Stop SOY!

It is Time to Stop Consuming Soy (Opinion)
by Dr. Jay Davidson, citizen journalist
(NaturalNews)
Soy burgers, soy cheese, soy ice cream, soy baby formula, soybean oil, tofu, all the way to soy milk - soy has taken over in America with a reputation for being all natural and good for you.
About 74 percent of U.S. consumers now believe soy products are healthy.
Although soybeans are considered a vegetable, that alone does not make it necessarily healthy.
It is interesting to note that soybeans were not listed as a food in the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) handbook in 1913, but as an industrial product.
In 2009, the soybean industry was a $6.8 billion dollar industry!

The marketing for soy has been aimed primarily at the health benefits of the isoflavones it contains, which is one of the phytochemicals in soybeans.
Isoflavones are the compounds which are being studied in relation to the relief of certain menopausal symptoms, cancer prevention, slowing or reversing osteoporosis and reducing the risk of heart disease.

The marketing and research has helped soymilk alone go from a $2 million dollar product in 1980 to $300 million dollar product in 2001! (2)

However, new research and studies have raised very important questions over the health benefits of soy.

The core of their concerns rests with the chemical makeup of the soybean.

Soybeans contain a natural chemical that mimics estrogen, the female hormone. Studies have shown that this chemical
  • might increase the risk of breast cancer in some women,
  • affect brain function in men and
  • lead to hidden developmental ab-normalities in infants.

Jill Schneider is an associate professor of biological sciences at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Through her extensive research she has discovered that a component of soybeans - isoflavones -

  • significantly accelerated the onset of puberty in the rodents. (3)

She points out that many babies who are allergic to cow`s milk are fed soy-based formulas, which contain isoflavones. Isoflavones, she says,

can act like estrogen, a natural hormone important in the development of both male and female humans and a baby fed soy will receive, through the phytoestrogens, the equivalent of approximately 5 birth control pills per day! (4)

Besides soy mimicking estrogen in the body it also contains a dangerous substance called phytic acid (or also referred to as phytates).

This substance is present in the bran or hulls of all seeds and legumes, but none have the high level of phytates which soybeans do.

Phytic acid blocks the body`s uptake of essential minerals like magnesium, calcium, iron and especially zinc.

Additionally, soybeans are highly resistant to phytate-reducing techniques, such as long, slow cooking.

In addition, soybeans also contain potent enzyme-inhibitors.

These inhibitors specifically block uptake of trypsin and other enzymes. Trypsin and the other enzymes are needed for protein digestion. Without them it can lead to serious gastric distress and to chronic deficiencies in amino acid uptake.

Soybeans also contain hemagglutinin, a clot-promoting substance which causes red blood cells to clump together and inhibits oxygen take-up and growth. Hemagglutinin and trypsin inhibitors are both "growth depressant" substances.

Although the act of fermenting soybeans does de-activate both hemagglutinin and trypsin inhibitors, cooking and precipitation do not. (5)

It is clear that soy is not suitable for human consumption unless it has gone through a rigorous fermentation process to reduce the anti-nutrient and phytate levels.

Examples of fermented soybeans are the following:

  • tempeh,
  • miso and
  • natto and
  • soybean sprouts.

If that's not enough, a very large percentage of soy - over 90% - is genetically modified and it also has one of the highest percentages of contamination by pesticides of any of the foods we eat.References:(1)

How to Increase Bone Strength

My Prescription for Bone Health by Dr. Mercola
These simple guidelines will help you maintain or increase your bone strength safely and naturally, without the use of drugs:
Increase your consumption of vegetables based on your body's unique nutritional type. If you find it difficult to eat the recommended amount of vegetables you need daily, you can also try vegetable juicing. Make sure your veggies are fresh, organic, locally grown vegetables that are not genetically modified.
Consume a healthy balance between omega-6 and omega-3 fats, and reduce or eliminate the amount of processed vegetable oils such as corn, canola, safflower, and soy.
Eat according to your nutritional type. This will ensure that you’re getting enough nutrients for your bones, as well as helping to correct your omega-6 to omega-3 ratio.
Avoid gluten, a grain protein that has been shown to decrease bone density. Gluten is found in wheat, barley, rye, oats and spelt.
Avoid soda and sugar, which increase bone damage by depleting your bones of calcium.
Avoid steroids, especially if you have asthma or any other autoimmune disease. Steroids increase your risk for osteoporosis.
Consider supplementing with vitamin K2 if you are not getting enough from food alone. Vitamin K2 serves as the biological "glue" that helps plug the calcium into your bone matrix. The dose is about 185 mcg per day.
Get enough vitamin D, ideally from proper amounts of sun exposure. Vitamin D builds your bone density by helping your body absorb calcium.
Exercise. Studies show that exercise is just as important to your bone health as eating a calcium-rich diet. Strength building exercises like weight training are especially helpful here.
Consider natural progesterone[v], which can increase your bone strength. It does this by serving as a growth promoter for the osteoblasts (the cells that build bone). For more on progesterone, please review Complications Regarding Progesterone Cream

GERD May be a Food Intolerance problem

source: http://blog.grasslandbeef.com/january-24-newsletter/?utm_campaign=catherinesarticle

Why Not to Take Acid Reducers for GERD, Acid Reflux and Gastritis
Catherine's Commentby Catherine Ebeling, RN BSN

In addition, reducing the levels of stomach acid will result in foods not being broken down as readily, leading to nutritional deficiencies such as
  • vitamin B12, folic acid, vitamin D, calcium, iron, and zinc.

If you fail to digest and absorb your food properly, you will not only increase your risk of GI problems, but also nearly every other chronic degenerative disease.
Vitamin and mineral deficiencies can cause

  • anemia, fatigue,
  • depression,
  • dementia,
  • muscle weakness,
  • tooth decay,
  • hearing loss,
  • osteoporosis,
  • heart and blood pressure irregularities,
  • hair loss,
  • weakness, fatigue and low energy.

The purported "cure" becomes worse than the illness!
While drugs may help the symptoms of reflux, what is the REAL cause of GERD?
Acid reflux is NOT a disease of too much acid being produced, more likely a condition where acid is coming back out of your stomach.

There are several contributing factors to this condition.
In many cases,

  • food allergies are the primary cause of acid reflux. Food allergies and intolerances can aggravate the symptoms and, in some cases, even cause acid reflux.
  • Before you resort to prescription medication, your best bet would be to check out food allergies or intolerances.
  • Food allergies result when the body's immune system launches an attack against the offending food item.
  • Some of the most common allergenic foods are: milk, wheat, soy, eggs, peanuts, nuts, shellfish, and citrus.

These foods account for about 90% of all food allergic reactions according to The Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network.

Two types of allergic reactions can occur when ingesting an offending substance.

  1. Severe symptoms of food allergies tend to occur with in a few minutes of eating the allergenic substance. Symptoms can include tingling in the mouth or throat, swelling of the throat, difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, cramping, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, eczema, hives and asthma attacks. Severe food allergies can progress rapidly into anaphylaxis and can become a medical emergency. But don't rule out food allergies even if you don't have reactions that severe.
  2. Food intolerances or sensitivities (including celiac disease) are also often allergic reactions as well, but do not have the dramatic and sudden onset. They often share similar GI symptoms to food allergies but they do not involve the same immune system response.
An ample quantity and quality of digestive enzymes are needed to break down, process and deliver food to maintain good health. Age, processed foods, celiac disease, and other things, can impair the body's ability to produce enough of the enzymes necessary for adequate digestion.

When these enzyme levels dip, chronic digestive disorders, food allergies and sensitivities may be experienced.

  • Taking a good quality digestive enzyme (you may have to experiment to find the right formulation) will go a long way towards helping.
If the digestive system is unable to break down and absorb certain foods, it may send out extra acid to compensate, and soon you have acid reflux, as your digestive system attempts to break down the offending foods. So many times the reflux and gastritis experienced are not the result of too much acid, but not enough acid or the right digestive enzymes.
  • If the foods that cause this are foods that are eaten frequently, which is often the case, soon the acid becomes a chronic irritant to the stomach, and can cause real damage.
The best way to find out if your digestive problems are the result of food allergies is to go on an elimination diet.

The biggest offenders are often

  • commercially prepared dairy products,
  • wheat/gluten,
  • corn and
  • soy.

Remove all wheat, gluten and dairy from the diet for a minimum of ten to fourteen days or more, and see if the reflux symptoms subside. Be vigilant and read labels carefully. Lots of gluten and dairy sneak into processed foods under other less obvious names.

For more information on gluten-containing food ingredients, check HERE.

After you have eliminated the offenders, add the gluten and dairy back in, one at a time.

Wait 2-3 days between each food trial, and write down all reactions in a food journal. Oftentimes though, it may take a month or more of avoiding the offenders before the acid reflux and gastritis is resolved, so be patient.
Other contributing factors that can cause heartburn/gastritis and GERD are:
• Certain foods cause the lower esophageal sphincter to relax, thus leading to heartburn. These include peppermint, coffee, alcohol and chocolate.
• Hiatal hernia: This is a physical condition where part of the stomach protrudes through the diaphragm.
• Low Acid Production: Ironically, low stomach acid levels can result in heartburn. This is much more common than increased acid.
• Medications: Many medications cause heartburn as a side effect, including, several acid blockers. These include:
o Prevacid, Prilosec, Zantac, etc. o Asthma inhalers (beclamethasone, flovent, etc). o Corticosteroids o Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen. o Antianxiety medications, such as diazepam (Valium) and lorazepam (Ativan). o Osteoporosis drugs such as alendronate (Fosamax).
• Overeating
• Pregnancy & Obesity: These are related in that both put pressure on the stomach, decreasing its volume and forcing food and acid upwards.
• Stress: Stress can be the sole cause of heartburn, but often it is exacerbating other causes.
• Smoking: Smoking also causes the lower esophageal sphincter to relax, leading to heartburn.

In general you will have to make some major lifestyle changes and keep a close eye on your diet.

Eating large amounts of processed foods and sugars is a certain way to worsen acid reflux as it will upset the bacterial balance in your stomach and intestine, as well as being hard to digest.
It is vitally important to eat grass-fed meats, wild-caught seafood, and a variety of organic vegetables and fruits, and high quality, organic, biodynamic, and locally grown foods.
Supplement with a high quality probiotic or make sure you include fermented foods in your diet. This will help balance your bowel flora, which can help eliminate helicobacter naturally. A good quality multi-vitamin and mineral supplement is essential to restoring your health and eliminating the nutritional deficiencies.
A note about proton pump inhibitors: PPI's are very popular because they work. However, these drugs create both tolerance and dependence on them, so stopping them suddenly can have serious repercussions.
NEVER stop taking proton pump inhibitors cold turkey. Wean yourself off them gradually or else there can be a severe rebound of symptoms, and the problem may end up being worse than before the medication.
Ideally, get a lower dose, and then gradually decrease your dose. Once you get down to the lowest dose of the proton pump inhibitor, you can start substituting with an over-the-counter H2 blocker like Tagamet, Cimetidine, Zantac, or Raniditine. Then gradually wean off the H2 blocker over the next several weeks. (From Dr. Mercola, Mercola.com)

Sugar & Pancreatic Cancer

Sugar Intake and Pancreatic Cancer Linked

By Helen Altonnhaltonn@starbulletin.com, June 2008.

While there has long been a connection between sugar intake and cancer, this new study shows specific ties to pancreatic cancer and sugar.
Fructose and sucrose intake might cause the disease, so says a study of multi-ethnic people.
Researchers analyzed data for 162,000 participants, including Caucasians, Japanese Americans and native Hawaiians in Hawaii and African Americans and Latinos in Los Angeles.
When the study began, participants were asked to answer a diet questionnaire. Over the next eight years, researchers followed up, looking for the occurrence of cancer, and compared the diet of those individuals with others in the test group. The group recorded 434 cases of pancreatic cancer.
The researchers concluded: "High fructose and sucrose intakes may play a role in pancreatic cancer etiology. Conditions such as overweight or obesity in which a degree of insulin resistance may be present may also be important."
Sucrose, extracted from sugarcane and sugar beets, is commonly known as cane sugar. Fructose occurs in fruits and fruit juices.
The pancreas, an organ that sits between the stomach and intestines, secretes digestive enzymes and produces insulin and other hormones that regulate the metabolism of sugar. Pancreatic cancer usually spreads rapidly and is seldom detected in the early stages, making it one of the most difficult cancers to treat and recover from.

Those who were obese and overweight with the highest sucrose intake had a 46 percent increase in risk of pancreatic cancer compared with the lowest intake. Those who used the highest amounts of fructose were 35 percent more likely to have the cancer.

The analysis fit previous observations of the researchers showing that people with diabetes or pre-diabetic conditions were at high risk for pancreatic cancer. Results of the diet are very consistent with what we know of the risk for diabetes and pancreatic cancer.
However, the study showed no link between pancreatic cancer and a factor known as glycemic load (a measure of carbohydrate intake) and additional sugars, as had been theorized.

The test group, known as a multiethnic cohort, was organized 24 years ago with 215,000 participants in Hawaii and California. Basic data were collected on their diets, physical activity, reproductive history, medications and subsequent illnesses. The National Cancer Institute funded the study to learn why some people get cancer.

got Cinnamon?????????

Cinnamon information can be found on NaturalNews website

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has published several cinnamon studies on human beings.

  • regulates blood sugar levels. Take one half teaspoon a day to normalize blood sugar

  • lowers cholesterol, lowers LDL levels.

  • digestive aid and antibacterial.

  • provides manganese, fiber, iron and calcium.

  • fights cancer of the blood and reduces blood clots

  • boosts memory,

  • fights arthritis,

  • helps ease intestinal cramps

  • relieves gas

  • promotes movement of food through the digestive system

  • acts as a muscle relaxant

  • relieves menstrual and night time leg cramps

  • antibacterial properties (especially intestinal bacteria and good for food poisoning)

**Note, powdered cinnamon in the store is old and lacking in many benefits.
I purchase cinnamon from MountainRose Herbs and grind a little at a time and use a full teaspoon on the morning steel cut oats, buckwheat or quinoa.

Natural News Article
Cinnamon was also used by many physicians to treat colds, coughing and sore throats.

Cinnamon And Diabetes
Studies in to the effects of cinnamon on people with diabetes are at this stage very minimal.
But the extremely positive results have the medical community screaming for larger trials.
In one study conducted in the Malmo University Hospital in Sweden, results showed that eating a meal laced with cinnamon actually lowered the food's effects on the blood's sugar levels.
The test only included 14 people half of whom were given normal rice pudding while the other half had rice pudding with cinnamon.
They repeated the test again at a later date and came up with the same results.

The researchers led by Joanna Hlebowicz believe that cinnamon may slow down part of the digestion process giving the body more time to break up the carbohydrates, therefore lessening the post-meal blood-glucose concentration.

Cinnamon And Arthritis
Another test conducted in Copenhagen seems to have found that cinnamon mixed with honey can significantly reduce the pain associated with arthritis.
The study was conducted on 200 arthritis suffers who were all given a honey and cinnamon mixture before they ate breakfast. All of the patients tested reported some improvement in their pain management while 73 of those seemed to be relieved of all pain within a month.

The results have astounded the medical community and brought hope to the thousands of chronic arthritis sufferers in the world.
While these tests are by no means conclusive, anything that may produce a positive result in the battle against these diseases without any nasty side effects is definitely worth trying.

Cholesterol

Lower Cholesterol is associated with improved risk of heart disease HOWEVER, as Martie Whittekin points out :

"That is like saying that fire engines are associated with fire. Every time you see a big fire, there's a fire engine there. So let's get rid of those fire engines."

Cholesterol is an antioxidant, a repair molecule! It is not a mistake! Cholesterol is there to help, it is ther to put out the fire that is causing the increased cholesterol.

The increased cholesterol is there because there's a problem in the arteries.

The body is trying to repair it.

The cholesterol is an antioxidant, it is a repair molecule, it is an alarm molecule.

It show up at the scene of the problem.

And instead of getting RID of the problem, we're getting rid of the repair molecule.

Cholesterol-lowering doesn't improve things and might make it worse over the long haul
.

In an article, Exposing the Cholesterol Fraud, we read:

More than a decade ago, Dr. Rath presented scientific evidence that indiscriminate lowering of cholesterol does not prevent heart attacks and strokes. This is because high cholesterol is a symptom but not the cause of heart disease. The production of cholesterol increases in response to weakening of the structure of the arteries of the heart and the need for their biological "repair". The most frequent reason for such weakening is impaired production of collagen – the building material of the blood vessel wall – which is caused by insufficient intake of micronutrients in our diet, such as vitamin C, Lysine, vitamin B6, copper and others. If these nutrients are not supplied, then cholesterol starts depositing in the arteries which with time leads to clogging of the blood flow, heart attacks and strokes. The cholesterol-based theory of heart disease does not explain why we are getting heart attacks but not nose or other organs attacks, why blockages occur in the arteries not veins, or many other aspects of heart disease. This theory only serves as a marketing tool for cholesterol lowering drugs.

Nutrients can really reverse those early cardiovascular deposits. Vitamin C, Lysine, and B6 are involved in doing that. Read Sherry Rogers, MD, book, Cholesterol Hoax.

Lower Blood Pressure

Information gleaned from an interview with Fred Pescatore, MD by Martie Whittekin 1-26-08

There are at least 40 supplements that have been shown to lower blood pressure.

Start with these recommendations by Dr. Pescatore:

  1. Magnesium.

  2. Taurine (amino acid)

  3. CoQ10 - helps heart beat better (Antioxidant nutrient, supports heart function, protects against free radical damage, improves energy production and immune response. Jarrow's QH Absorb is Ubiquinol, the reduced (active antioxidant) form of Co-Q10, the form which is directly used in human metabolism as a lipid-soluble antioxidant. While standard Co‑Q10 (ubiquinone) supplements can be activated in the body, this activation can be less efficient in some individuals, based on age or genetics.

  4. Carnitine - also good for the heart

  5. Fish Oil

  6. Inositol (It can help with liver function and reduce hypertension. Inositol hexaniacinate and inositol hexanicotinate both help lower cholesterol, which helps prevent heart attacks. A lack of inositol in the system can lead to such conditions as constipation, high cholesterol, problems with vision and general health of the eyes, and hair loss.)

  7. Eat an anti-inflammatory diet

  8. Take a probiotic because gut health is the underlying reason for inflammation.

Blood sugar roller coaster

The Blood Sugar Roller coaster (This is one ride you don’t want your kids to get on)
Erika Siegel, ND, LAc
Saturday, 16 January 2010

Our brain’s primary fuel source is sugar (glucose). When our blood sugar gets low- the brain cries “FEED ME NOW!” and will stop at nothing to be satiated.
This will make a sensible person eat half of a birthday cake at the office before coming up for air and realizing what she has done.
When kids eat a high carbohydrate meal (plain noodles, bread with jelly, pancakes with syrup) or too many sweets (soda, candy), they will get the sugar HIGH and then the sugar CRASH.
First their blood sugar will climb the roller coaster, sending them into hyperactivity.
The body wants to keep the sugar level in control so it will pump out insulin to bring it back down.
Large amounts of insulin will quickly drop blood sugar and even overcompensate, causing blood sugar to fall below the balanced level.
The brain detects this and in an effort to survive starts the process over again with a dramatic call for “MORE FOOD NOW!”

When glucose levels drop too low, we crave more sugar instead of a healthy salad or sandwich.
It also makes us feel irritable, unable to concentrate and fatigued.
Many kids actually ride this roller coaster all day long!
The extra glucose being removed from the blood gets put away in storage for future use, this leads to weight gain if it goes unused.
Over time, with high glucose and insulin in the blood, the cells become resistant to insulin- the cause for type 2 diabetes (no longer called “adult onset” because we are seeing it in kids now!). The obesity and diabetes are on the rise in U.S. children can often be prevented with smarter food choices and exercise.

Riding the blood sugar roller coaster makes kids
  • hyperactive,
  • irritable,
  • emotional, and
  • lack focus.

It puts them at risk for obesity and diabetes.

Sound nutrition choices are the most effective way to prevent these problems.
So what do you feed them?
~ Balance the carbohydrates (bread, pasta, crackers, chips, rice, cookies) with some protein and fat.

When there is fat or protein in a meal- the sugar will enter the blood stream more slowly, reducing the risk of a sugar spike.

Fiber will also slow sugar down -- this is why we recommend whole fruit (with fiber intact) over a cup of fruit juice which is mostly sugar.
- If your kid just has to have a bagel for breakfast, top it with nut butter, hummus, avocado or sliced meat. If oatmeal is a favorite breakfast, trade the sweetened instant oatmeal for its high fiber whole form,“steel cut oats,” and add chopped nuts and fresh or dried fruit. If you are going to enjoy a little ice cream after dinner make sure dinner had some good protein and fat. Consider mixing a spoonful of peanut butter into the ice cream or top with nuts.
- Limit super sweet foods like dried fruit and fruit leather. A little is great before activity or as part of a meal with protein and fat.
~ Completely avoid corn syrup.
~ Limit cane sugar, cane juice, candy.
~ Watch the drinks!!!! Many kids live on “sugar water” disguised as a healthy drink. Avoid all energy drinks, gatorade, full-strength juice, sweetened lemonade and soda (even the “healthy” ones.)
~ Get moving!! Kids need to play, move and run around every day! Muscle activity is the most effective way to burn up extra glucose in the blood.
Keeping your kids' blood sugar stable helps keep them stable -- emotionally and physically.

Cilantro & Coffee - Heavy Metal Detox

Cilantro:
Herb Assists in Heavy Metal Detoxification
by Kim Evans, citizen journalist
(NaturalNews)
Heavy metals have inundated most of our bodies and they're a source of many serious health problems. In fact, when you understand how pervasive heavy metals are and the problems they cause, it'll probably become important to you to remove them from your body.
Fortunately, with the help of a little cilantro, you can do effective heavy metal detoxification right in your own home.

Cilantro is commonly used in many heavy metal detoxification programs.
It's been found to remove heavy metals from the body, and best of all, cilantro's inexpensive and does the job without any man-made chemicals.

Many home-based heavy metal detoxification programs recommend consuming several tablespoons of a cilantro-based pesto each day, or taking cilantro-based supplements over the course of several months, to help remove the metals.

Both will help, and they're best done with colon cleansing to ensure the metals you're loosening for removal actually make it outside your body.
However, if you're interested in taking your heavy metal detoxification to the next level, you can add the fresh juice of a half a cup of organic cilantro to any 2-quart coffee enema.
This will not only cleanse your liver, but also bring the heavy metal detoxification power of cilantro directly to your blood where it can be distributed throughout your body and can immediately do its work.
Using this method, large quantities of heavy metals can instantly be removed with the enema - and their quick release prevents the loosened metals from doing further damage on the way out.

If you've ever been a heavy smoker, be sure to deeply massage your throat and cheeks while holding this enema inside to loosen the metals in those areas.
You'll likely see all sorts of black filth in the release.

Cilantro and coffee enemas can be a fast, effective way to remove those toxic metals.

However, like many detoxification methods, they'll need to be done repeatedly to achieve through results. This is simply due to the fact that most people have been polluting their bodies daily since childhood and there can be a lot of work to do.

Why You Might Need a Heavy Metal Detox

If you're wondering why you might need heavy metal detoxification have a look at some common sources of heavy metals.
Keep in mind, this list is nowhere near comprehensive.
Non-organic foods:
Heavy metals are used in pesticides and fertilizers, so they're sprayed on plants and dumped on the soil the plants use as food.
The water supply:
Industrial and agricultural waste goes right into the water supply when it rains.
Eating fish:
Fish living in polluted environments become polluted (just as we do).
In mother's milk:
Pollution from mother to infant is commonly found.
The blood of newborns:
Pollution in the womb; its found each time someone looks.
Mainstream deodorants:
Females often apply aluminum after shaving and creating small holes in the skin. Aluminum absorbs either way, but this makes it easier.
Cigarette smoke:
Hundreds of chemicals are in cigarettes - heavy metals too.
Foods cooked in aluminum cookware or aluminum foil
Over-the-counter drugs, including antacidsVaccines:
Even if administered in youth
Your mouth:
If you have "silver" fillings
Heavy Metal Toxicity and Disease:
The Connection
Heavy metals have been connected with many serious health problems including
  • cancer,
  • heart disease,
  • brain deterioration,
  • emotional problems,
  • kidney disease,
  • lung disease, and
  • weak bones.

If you think about it, heavy metals are connected with all sorts of diseases that many people think are related to just getting older.

These are also diseases a doctor will tell you that drugs are needed "to manage."

Organic Snacks may contain Hidden MSG

Don't be fooled by Organic Snacks - they may contain hidden MSG

INGREDIENTS: Organic wheat flour, water, organic expeller-pressed soybean oil, salt, organic caramel color, organic rye flour, organic onion powder, organic evaporated cane juice, organic garlic powder, organic vital wheat gluten, organic corn flour, natural flavors, yeast, lactic acid, citric acid, torula yeast, sodium bicarbonate.

When we buy processed foods then we need to be careful about ingredients...if you want to be healthy....no artificial anything should be consumed!

If you can't pronounce the ingredient, it was probably cooked up in a lab. Never heard of it before....Google it and see what it is!

MSG hides under many alias names:
Don't be fooled by the label, "no MSG added"

The federal government says that if it’s not more than 99% MSG, food companies can call it what they want.

So it can say:
Free Glutamate,
Glutamic Acid,
Monopotassium glutamate,
textured protein,
autolyzed plant protein,
autolyed yeast,
yeast extract,
soy protein isolate,
vegetable protein isolate
natural flavors,
artificial flavors,
spice
Torula yeast
Carageenan

Mike Adams says, "This latest one is called "torula yeast" and instead of being a yeast extract, this is just a specific type of yeast.

Again, it has the same purpose in food -- to make otherwise boring foods taste sensational. Torula yeast is now found in many snack products, even many so-called natural snacks.

I've seen it in chips and a number of fried snack foods.

It seems like this ingredient is going to be increasingly popular in the years ahead because it looks so non-threatening to the consumer.

It doesn't look like MSG, and it technically isn't yeast extract, but in my opinion, this ingredient is quite harmful.

MSG is a neurotoxin.
Little children are consuming this daily - what will it lead to?
MSG in any form can lead to

  • dementia,

  • cancer,

  • heart disease and

  • obesity.

Do you know how researchers make lab rats obese for studies? Feed them MSG.

Read more. Dr. Blaylock, neurosurgeon talks about the effect of MSG and aspartame on the brain: http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_individual.asp?blog_id=667385

Quercetin Stabilizes Mast Cells

from WellnessResources

Quercetin reduces histamine release and other chemicals from mast cells

Study Title:Role of quercetin (a natural herbal compound) in allergy and inflammation.

Study Abstract:

Quercetin is a bioflavonoid found in
  • red wine,
  • grapefruit,
  • onions,
  • apples,
  • black tea, and, in lesser amounts, in
  • leafy green vegetables and beans.

Quercetin has an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity and prevents cancer.

Quercitin inhibits the growth of certain malignant cells in vitro, and histamine and most cyclin-dependent kinases and also displays unique anticancer properties.

Quercetin is a natural compound that blocks substances involved in allergies and is able to act as an inhibitor of mast cell secretion, causes a decrease in the release of tryptase, MCP-1 and IL-6 and the down-regulation of histidine decarboxylase (HDC) mRNA from few mast cell lines.

Quercetin is a safe, natural therapy that may be used as primary therapy or in conjunction with conventional methods.

You are Invited............

You are invited to join a growing group of people that will step out of their comfort zone

We want to be stronger and healthier in 2010 than we have ever been.
We want to kick sick out the door.
We want to get to our ideal weight!

Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired?
Want to lose weight or gain weight?
Want to clear up chronic skin conditions?
Want to get rid of chronic headaches?

We are going to use a (free) tool used by Naturopathic Doctors and Nutritionists to help people discover if their chronic symptoms are caused by food intolerances.

Food intolerance is quite common. It is when you develop symptoms after eating a food that the digestive system cannot adequately process. The symptoms will be less severe than a true food allergy, but they can undermine health and well-being. The most common food intolerance is lactose intolerance followed by gluten intolerance.

Some people need to gain weight while others need to lose weight.
Did you know that sensitivity to gluten can cause people to have trouble with weight gain or weight loss!?

Here’s some common problems observed with gluten intolerance:
headaches
mouth ulcers
problems with weight gain or weight loss
poor immunity to disease
Skin rashes like dermatitis and eczema
GI symptoms like excess diarrhea, flatulence
abdominal or stomach pain
fatigue
bone or joint pain
difficulty concentrating
irritability
low iron
depression
Infertility, irregular menstrual cycle and miscarriage
Cramps, tingling and numbness
Slow infant and child growth
Decline in dental health

So, what is this free tool and how does it work? The tool is called the Elimination Diet.
Any person that suffers from any chronic symptoms should rule out the possibility that they are reacting to one or more types of food.

God has created our bodies to be self-healing machines when we give our bodies the right food. Whole food, the way God created it -- vegetables, fruits, legumes, seeds, nuts, whole grains (not the same thing as bakery goods make with processed whole grains!) and some animal protein.

This is a great goal for the New Year – why not take a few weeks to see how good you can feel and how much energy you can enjoy!

This is not a weight loss program – this is serious business, requiring 100% compliance (sneaking a cookie will set the whole experiment back to day 1).

Do you want to get well?
Do you want to kick SICK out the door?
Do you want to increase your energy and improve your health?

…. then email me for info about the Elimination Diet.
If you are jumping in with us this month let me know!
There is power in accountability! I have lots of good recipes to share!

Your passion is for LIFE – HEALTH – ENERGY – VITALITY! (Not potato chips!)

YOU CAN DO THIS!
It is not a life sentence – it is just food!

Well do you want to feel fabulous or not!??

Ammonia in your McDonalds & Burger King Hamburger

Mike Adams at NaturalNews.com wrote today about ammonia being in McDonalds, Burger King and School Lunch program hamburgers. Yum, please pass the ketchup.

Read the story the was published in the NY Times HERE

"Eight years ago, federal officials were struggling to remove potentially deadly E. coli from hamburgers when an entrepreneurial company from South Dakota came up with a novel idea: injecting beef with ammonia.

The company, Beef Products Inc., had been looking to expand into the hamburger business with a product made from beef that included fatty trimmings the industry once relegated to pet food and cooking oil. The trimmings were particularly susceptible to contamination, but a study commissioned by the company showed that the ammonia process would kill E. coli as well as salmonella.
