"Modern bitters can serve as highly effective digestive aids, replacing potentially harmful antacids and other over-the-counter chemical remedies that do nothing but mask symptoms.

Bitters get right down to the heart of the matter - or perhaps more accurately the stomach of it - by helping the body produce its own digestive juices. This enhances our ability to absorb nutrients from our foods.

Bitters begin their work the moment they touch your tongue. Their bitter nature stimulates the stomach, the liver, the gallbladder and the pancreas to begin secreting vital digestive components used to assimilate nutrients in the body, such as bile, gastric juices and insulin. The liver's ability to eliminate toxins is also enhanced."

Mary Ann Copson, Evenstaronline reports:

Bitters
  • increase or stabilize the appetite. In general, there is a stimulation of the appetite which is important in conditions of convalescence and where there is otherwise a reduction of appetite. Bitters do not seem to increase appetite in a digestively healthy person, rather a more healthful balance in the appetite develops. The body acquires more taste for healthy foods and less taste for unhealthy foods.
  • activate the gastric secretion of hydrochloric acid and other digestive enzymes
  • stimulate the liver to do a more effective cleansing and detoxifying job and prompt the gallbladder to make bile. The production of bile helps metabolize fats and keeps elimination moving smoothly.
  • produce a diuretic and hepatic effect in the body. This has value when working with any condition that has origins in a sluggish or overworked liver
  • produce a regulatory effect on the secretion of the pancreas of the hormones that regulate blood sugar, insulin, and glucagon. This can be of benefit in stabilizing insulin levels and modulating blood sugar swings. Diabetics should be careful when taking bitters because bitters may upset their blood sugar balance.

Real People Reviews from Vitacost.com:

"Both my husband and I have had amazing results with the Swedish Bitters. Our problems with indigestion and irregularity are a thing of the past.
This is a formula I never want to be without.
Pauligirl
"Seems I've always had a sensitive stomach. Believe me I've tried everything. NOTHING ELSE soothes my stomach instantly, as Swedish Bitters. An older lady turned me on to them years ago. I buy the largest size and the smallest size and keep refilling the small one to take with me on trips. I don't leave home w/o it. Especially good if you eat out (or at someone's home--food you're not used to). Thank God for this product."

"For years I've made sure I always have this product handy. When needed it quickly relieves the full feeling from over eating or eating dinner too late or when something just doesn't agree with you. It truly tastes bitter so don't expect a delicious flavor but know you'll feel better within 15 minutes or so. It works great!"
Bodg
"I had my gallbaldder out 1 1/2yr ago and this product can really help with after-meal bloat. It tastes very pungent, but in a good way. It contains valerian root which I believe is what causes the VERY relaxed feeling that comes after taking it. I wouldn't take it if I had to drive a car or something soon afterward. But that feeling only lasts a little while. I believe the product does what it says, but could definitely come at a better price."

  1. I don't mind the upset in my sugar balance presently that I am fairly sure I can attribute to the week and a bit of taking swedish bitters regularly ( the hemmes brand). In the first week or so I didn't notice much of a difference in my regularly high sugar readings. I'm type 2 diabetic, insulin dependent for a few months now and have been having trouble getting readings below 9.5 (Aussie). In the last few days my readings have been coming down to the 'normal' readings range. My cravings for carbs has been minimal and even though I've been enjoying much home grown figs and peaches, my sugar levels are right down. I know it's early days yet, and I'm still taking my insulin as required, but it looks promising. I've been diagnosed with diabetes since 1997 and have always had problems keeping in the normal range for my blood sugar levels - gradually going from diet controlled to diabetes tablets to byetta injects and now insulin.

I am aware that all people are different in their responses to swedish bitters - for me I am hoping this is going to be my answer to controlling my diabetes. It's still early days and the lower readings might just be a short term response (as has happened to me so much over the years with trying different methods of diabetes control). I'm Hoping.

  2. BTW - just because I'm happy about the swedish bitters appearing to help with my diabetes (getting lower readings) doesn't mean I will be stopping my insulin injections (not unless the doctor and the diabetes educator indicate otherwise).
