Charlie horses? Varicose Veins?

Horsetail and oat straw tea deliver absorbable calcium to the body

Refined white sugar, white flour products, alcohol, soft drinks, the use of steroids, and junk foods leach calcium from the bones in order to correct the acid formation in the blood and tissues of the body. Varicose veins, muscle cramps and "Charlie horses," tooth decay and loss, painful teething in babies, and anxiety issues are all due to calcium imbalances.

A simple hot tea made with equal parts horsetail and and oat straw taken three times a day may help relieve the symptoms of all of the above health concerns. A different recipe calls for a combination of oat straw, horsetail, comfrey leaves, and lobelia to combine the calcium in horsetail and oat straw with the bone-knitting properties of comfrey. Lobelia is an adaptogen which helps the other herbs work together.

Grain-free Pizza (some dairy-free too) Paleo Pizza Recipe

Paleo Pizza Crust

 http://cavemanstrong.com/2011/01/paleo-pizza-crust/

Crust:
·         2 cups almond meal
·         2 eggs
·         3 tbsp olive oil
·         ¼ tsp baking soda
·         1 tsp garlic powder
·         1 ½ tbsp fresh rosemary chopped
Toppings:
·         1 cup organic marinara sauce from Trader Joe’s
·         1 lb Italian pork sausage nitrate free
·         2 crook neck yellow summer squash diced
·         3 green onions chopped
·         Handful of torn basil leaves
·         2 small tomatoes diced
·         1/2 cup roasted red peppers diced
·         Handful of sliced black olives

Preheat your oven to 350.
Using a spoon mix all crust ingredients together until it becomes very thick.
Using your hands, form the dough into a ball.
Lightly grease a pizza pan or a cookie sheet with olive oil.

Place the ball of dough in the center of your cookie sheet or pizza pan and using your hands, push and pat the dough down into the shape of a circle (or an oval in my case…).

You want to make the dough as thin as possible.
Your pizza will be about 12 inches across.

Bake JUST the crust in your pre-heated oven for 20 minutes.

While your crust is cooking, prepare your toppings.

If you use sausage like we did, this is when you should crumble it into a large sauté pan and brown.

After the crust if done, remove from the oven and evenly spread the marinara sauce over the crust.

Add the sausage and all remaining toppings evenly over the sauce and bake again for an additional 25-30 minutes.

Get creative and use whatever toppings you might like – ours was great but I also suggest trying chicken, artichoke hearts, and even broccoli!!

Go wild with it and as always: Enjoy!

Paleo pizza recipe

http://paleodietlifestyle.com/paleo-pizza/

Crust Ingredients

  • ½ cup coconut flour
  • 1 cup almond meal
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 4 eggs
  • 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
  • ½ cup coconut milk

Topping ingredients

  • A few tbsp tomato pesto or of your favorite tomato sauce
  • 8 sun-dried tomatoes, chopped
  • 3 artichoke hearts, chopped
  • 8 button mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil, for cooking
  • 50g-100g good quality cooked ham, shaved  (or other meat, such as nitrate-free Italian sausage)

Preparation

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 F.
  2. Always begin your pizza making by preparing the crust. This is necessary for this recipe, as the crust requires some cooking time without the toppings.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the coconut flour, almond meal, baking powder and garlic powder.
  4. Using a whisk to eliminate any clumping, start mixing in the wet ingredients. I usually continue to whisk as I do this, because it helps prevent the dry ingredients from clumping. You will reach a point when your whisk becomes useless and your hands are necessary, generally when the mixture starts forming a batter.
  5. The batter will seem quite soft and much different in texture than the usual pizza dough, but once cooked it will take the right form.
  6. On a well greased and rimmed pizza pan, pour in the batter and spread it until it’s covering the complete surface. It’s important to use a rimmed pan so the batter doesn’t spill off.
  7. Throw just the crust in the oven and allow it to bake alone for 15-20 minutes.
  8. Meanwhile, prepare all of your toppings so that you just have to put them on once the crust has baked.
  9. For the mushrooms, simply heat a pan of a medium heat and cook the sliced mushrooms with the coconut oil for 3 to 4 minutes, until they are well-cooked.
  10. Spread the sauce on the surface of the crust, as much or as little as you like. Sprinkle on the sun-dried tomatoes, artichokes and cooked mushrooms and then top with the ham.
  11. With the oven still at 375 F, bake the whole pizza for another 10 or so minutes, just to allow the toppings to cook. And then that’s it! Little prep, little cooking, a great pizza to enjoy with your family or friends!

A1 A2 beta-casein. Beyond Organic. Thomas Cowan.

Beta Casein Protein

Can you tolerate dairy products from goats but not cows? Then you might be able to tolerate dairy from A2 beta-casein cattle.

The following article is from HealthFoodEmporium:

Beyond Organic has USA's largest A2 beta-casein cattle herd. Why is this so important?

It is believed by many in the scientific community that the majority of our milk might be contributing to some of the diseases so prevalent today, specifically cardiovascular disease.

Milk proteins come in two types, whey and casein.
  • Casein comprises about 80% of the total protein in milk, and of that protein there are A1 and A2 beta-casein.
  • Cows pass down either A1, A2 or both to their offspring just like we pass down eye color to our children. A thousand years ago the majority of cattle were A2, then the genetically mutated A1 strain appeared.
  • The original A2 milk is generally produced in Africa, Asia and France, and also in goats milk.
  • Upwards of 90% of cattle in the US are A1 cattle, but Beyond Organic’s dairy herd is 100% A2 beta-casein cattle.
  • Beyond Organic’s Amasai, Raw cheeses and all other products made with diary will come from A2 cattle.
Why is that important?
Emerging evidence is showing an association between a particular protein ( A1 beta-casein ) found in cows milk and an increased risk of developing heart disease and insulin-dependant diabetes. It may also aggravate neurological conditions such as autism and schizophrenia.

According to research, A1 milk is more likely to be a factor in heart disease and Type 1 diabetes.

Spearheading the research was New Zealand scientist Dr. Corran (Corrie) McLachlan, who said that the protein casein found in the milk is the culprit.

McLachlan had spent five years researching A1 beta-casein protein to theorize that it is linked not only to heart disease, but also to Type 1 diabetes, autism, and schizophrenia.

According to McLachlan,
"There are three types of casein in cow's milk, called alpha, beta, and kappa.
Each type comes in certain variants, depending on the genetics of the cow that produced it. For example,
  • more than 70% of Guernsey cows produce the A2 variety of beta casein in their milk, where
  • 70% of Red Danish Dairy cattle produce the A1 variety of beta casein."
The researcher also pointed out that one cow could produce both A1 and A2 because it could receive different genes from the mother and father. Black and white Friesian cows, very common in dairy herds in many countries, have this combination of the two genes.

If you are interested more in this science, there’s a great book called “The Devil in the Milk” by Dr. Thomas Cowan.

The trouble is that we have “the wrong kind of cows”. It seems the black and white cows — Holsteins and Friesians — generally give milk that contains a small but significant amount of beta-casein type A1, which behaves like an opiate and which epidemiological studies have implicated in heart disease, Type 1 diabetes, autism and schizophrenia. This is big news, folks. Heart disease is the leading cause of death. This is like cigarettes and cancer. Dr. Thomas Cowan, co-founder of the Weston A. Price Foundation has published this fascinating introduction to the subject in his email newsletter:
Devil in the Milk
Devil in the Milk

“I have been involved in thinking about the medicinal aspects of cow’s milk virtually my entire career. As one four-year-old child pointed out to me many years ago, “Mommy, I know why he always talks about milk, his name is Cow—an.” So, I guess this milk “obsession” is no surprise.

The obsession started in earnest about 25 years ago when I read the book The Milk of Human Kindness Is Not Pasteurized by maverick physician William Campbell Douglass, MD. This was one of the most influential books I have ever read. I became convinced that a large part of the disease in this country is related to the way we handle, or rather mishandle, milk and milk products. Raw and cultured dairy products from healthy grass-fed cows are one of the healthiest foods people have ever eaten. It is the very foundation of western civilization (not that this is necessarily so good).

On the other hand, pasteurized, particularly low-fat, milk products have caused more disease than perhaps any other substance people are generally in contact with. This view was re- enforced when I met and joined up with Sally Fallon and learned the principles of the Weston A. Price Foundation. End of story, I thought – I could stop thinking about milk. continue reading this article

Slipping a GMO Mickey in Your Ice Cream

Franken Ice Cream
Summer is coming! More picnics, festivals, boating, evening walks after dinner, and trips to get frosty ice structuring protein.
WHHHHHAAAT? Frosty ice structuring protein?
Americans love ice cream and plunk down $25 billion every year to get their fix.
Quietly the big kahuna of ice cream, Unilever, has been slipping a mickey into your ice cream. A genetically modified mickey.
Ice structuring protein
This biotech wonder comes from genetic modification and was formerly known as "antifreeze protein" until someone in Unilever marketing rubbed two brain cells together.
Unilever is the global British-Dutch company behind brands like Breyer's Ice cream, Ben and Jerry's, Good Humor, Klondike and Popsicle.
They are messing with your ice cream.
These trusted brands can no longer be trusted. You think you are eating a “natural” frozen dessert, right?
Words like "all natural" are disappearing
Up until recently, Breyer's used to be milk, cream, sugar, vanilla ("all natural" according to them).
No, Virginia, sugar is not natural.
As we saw on 60 minutes and in Robert Lustig’s viral Youtube video, Sugar the Bitter Truth:
The Good Humor Man
My 60's and 70's memories include the Good Humor truck rolling regularly through the neighborhood. Bye bye Good Humor man, Unilever bought you too. For the last few years my family has been subjected to the no-name ice cream guy driving  a junky van blaring out The Sting theme song, a monotonous tune that slowly bore a hole into my head. (Curiously, this ice cream guy has gone missing)
Pull out your ice cream stash from the freezer and read the package.
Look at the marketing on the front and the ingredients on the back.
Breyers Smooth & Dreamy, Extra Creamy Triple Chocolate Chip
"less fat and calories than regular ice cream"
(Hmmm, how DO they achieve all than dreamy creaminess while skimming the fat from the cream?)
The horrific list of ingredients found in many Breyer's Ice Cream products includes
  • fake fiber
  • antifreeze
  • trans fats
  • MSG
  • genetically modified ingredients
  • Carcinogenic coloring agents
No, it doesn't say that. You have to know the secret handshake to get that information out of Big Food.  Here's the code:
Polydextrose (Why is "fiber" in your ice cream and Cocoa Pebbles? Because fake fiber has been added like polydextrose, inulin, or maltodextrin)
Corn Syrup and other sugars
Propylene Glycol (antifreeze)
Mono- & Diglycerides (synthetic or derived from cow, pig or plant, may contain trans fats)
Carrageenan (contains MSG, animal studies show it harms digestive tract and even can cause cancer. It is used as a thickener in place of real cream.)
Ice Structuring Protein (GMO, see below)
Artificial Flavor (MSG)
Caramel Color (carcinogenic)
Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil (trans fat, clogs arteries and causes obesity)
Wow! Popsicle has a slow-melting variety!
Now you know how that is possible.  Ice Structuring Proteins (aka ISP or Antifreeze proteins). Popsicle puts ISPs in lots of products. Remember Unilever owns Popsicle too.
Where else is Unilever sticking Ice Sculpturing Proteins. Keep an eye on your Breyer's, Good Humor, Popsicle, Klondike, Ben & Jerry's or someone might be slipping in a genetically modified mickey.

***Hang in there, I have some great REAL FOOD Ice Cream Recipes below***
You didn't know Unilever was #1 in ice cream?
Unilever dominates the world-wide tea market too and has acquired companies like Lipton and PG Tips
Unilever was created when a margarine company merged with a soap company to become a giant monopoly with large tentacles in many areas of consumer packaged goods and foods  (Hellman's, Bertolli, Knorr, Vaseline, Axe cologne, and many soaps, lotions, deodorant and cleaning products).
In 1993 Kraft sold its ice cream brands to Unilever.  Then came the flurry of cost-cutting measures and reformulations in your favorite brands.
By hiding behind brand names Unilever could be the biggest company you never heard of.  They hope that we think we are still buying from smaller companies that care about ingredients.
Did I mention Unilever dabbles in  biotech ... Genetically Modified stuff?
Just like Monsanto, this lumbering giant is a biotechnology company developing and using genetically modified ingredients, most notably Ice Structuring Protein (ISP).
(The previous link to Unilever's GMO position worked yesterday and has now vanished. They're on to me.)

Ice Structuring Protein & The Pout
When God made the ocean pout, these fish were equipped to dwell in icy cold ocean water because they had special proteins to protect against freezing ("antifreeze protein").
Some bored people figured out this same protein had remarkable properties when used in making ice cream. The only problem is, with PETA and all, nobody was signing up for the contract to acquire truck loads of ocean pout just so Unilever could make creamy dreamy fat-free ice cream.
Unilever researchers discovered a way to use genetic modification to take the DNA from the ocean pout and insert it in a yeast.
The process is much cheaper and results in Ice Structuring Proteins that can be added to ice cream so that manufacturers can use fewer premium ingredients like real cream.
Unilever is laughing all the way to the bank by selling us stripped ice cream that is now "creamier, low fat, and less calories" because it uses genetically modified proteins. "GM yeast proteins are present" in the final product.
Unilever is also one of the world’s biggest buyers of fish. (!)

¿Por qué el pescado?

  1. Alaskan Salmon is one of Unilever's top fish products.
  2. Genetically engineered ice structuring proteins can be inserted in salmon to make them sturdy year-round. Unilever is in the business with AquaBounty to produce genetically modified salmon.
  3. Genetically engineered fast-growing salmon are possibly being approved as the first GMO animal food in America.
  4. It is about the money. It is not about Unilever wanting to feed the world sustainable fish.

We don't want to eat genetically modified foods in any form.
(Even when the government says they are safe)
Little human safety testing is done on GMO crops but they are linked to infertility, liver damage, allergies, disease and death.  What about autoimmune diseases?
Autoimmune diseases are on the rise and these never-existed-before-proteins, like Ice Structuring Proteins, are contributing to the problem.
While we are on the subject, we would all do well to avoid the following top 5 crops that are usually grown with GMO seeds:
  • soy (94%)
  • corn (88%)
  • cotton (90%)
  • canola (90%)
  • sugar beets (95%)
These little toxic chemicals and GMO changes are popping into your trusted brands every day. If you choose to eat processed food, always check ingredients. If you can’t pronounce it, then you probably don’t want to eat it.
Is there a safe ice cream?
Not on the store shelves but you can make yourself a treat.  Just check your Google recipe box.
(dairy-free, sugar-free, grain-free)
I found this recipe dairy-free, sugar-free recipe
that uses whole foods and it doesn’t require an ice cream maker.

Oil Pulling with coconut oil

Oil Pulling for a Brighter Smile and Better Health

“That sounds ridiculous,” exclaimed Rick in disbelief. “It will never work. How could it? It doesn’t make any sense.” Rick suffered from chronic sinusitis. At night when lying down, his nose would stop up, making it difficult for him to breathe and to sleep. The congestion also caused him to experience frequent headaches.
The therapy I was telling him about was oil pulling. Although oil pulling has its origins in Ayurvedic medicine, which dates back thousands of years, this modern version is relatively new, at least in the United States.
Oil pulling is very simple. Basically all you do is rinse your mouth out with vegetable oil, much like you would with a mouthwash. As simple as it sounds, if done correctly it has a very powerful cleansing and healing affect not only on the mouth and sinuses, but the entire body.
A few days later, Rick called me on the phone. “Wow! This oil pulling stuff really works,” he exclaimed. “My sinuses began to drain immediately. I expelled a lot of dark yellow, gross looking mucous. I’m breathing easier and sleeping better and my headaches are gone!”
I wasn’t surprised with Rick’s success. I hear many similar responses from others with various health problems. “I was skeptical at first,” says Cynthia. “I couldn’t see how swishing oil in my mouth could help with my arthritis. After eight days I noticed the pain in my hands diminished considerably. There was also marked improvement in my neck and I could move my head from side to side without any pain. I was amazed at how quickly I got results. I haven’t felt this good in along time!”
Some people think I’m crazy when I tell them that oil pulling can help those with asthma, allergies, chronic fatigue, diabetes, migraine headaches, PMS, and chronic skin problems.

Oil pulling works by detoxifying or cleansing the body. In this way, disease promoting toxins are removed, thus allowing the body to heal itself. As a consequence, health problems of all types improve.

“I’ve suffered for several years with joint and lower back pain,” says Anna. “Every morning it was difficult getting out of bed because the pain. After two months of oil pulling the pain is all but gone. I’m amazed. Although I began oil pulling to relieve the joint pain, a few other things happened that I didn’t expect.
  •  I’m surprised to see that the eczema on my arm and hand disappearing and my skin becoming smoother and softer. Nothing I had tried before had helped.
  •  I sleep better at night too, so I have more energy during the day. I no longer need my mid-day naps.
  • I have so much energy I almost feel like a teenager again.
  • My periods have become more regular with less cramping and less mood swings.
  • Also, my teeth, gums, and tongue are cleaner than they’ve ever been.”
The first thing that most people notice when they start oil pulling is an improvement in their oral health. Teeth become whiter, breath becomes fresher, and the tongue and gums take on a healthy pink color.  Even problems such as bleeding gums, tooth decay, and gum disease are greatly diminished or completely healed.
“I had a really bad infection in my mouth,” says Brittany. “It was so painful that I could not sleep. Pain medication helped temporarily. I was sure that I needed another root canal. After hearing about oil pulling I decided to give it a try before going to the dentist. I began oil pulling three times a day. By the very next day the pain was gone! No soreness, nothing. I was shocked. I continue to oil pull and my teeth are whiter and healthier looking then they have ever been. My gums have stopped bleeding, they used to bleed after every brushing. They are no longer receding and my teeth feel tighter. On my last visit to the dentist he was amazed at how much better my teeth and gums looked. He told me to continue to do whatever I was doing.”
Oil pulling traces it roots to oil gargling practiced in Ayurvedic medicine. Oil pulling as we know it today, was introduced in 1992 by Dr. F. Karach, MD. Dr. Karach claimed that oil pulling could cure a variety of illnesses ranging from heart disease and digestive troubles to hormonal disorders. He said it cured him of a chronic blood disorder of 15 years duration and within three days it cured his arthritis, which at times was so painful he was bed ridden. He used the method in his medical practice with great success.
Dr. Karach’s method of oil pulling consists of swishing, not gargling, vegetable oil in the mouth. The oil is “worked” in the mouth by pushing, pulling, and drawing it through the teeth for a period of 15 to 20 minutes. It is done one to three times a day on an empty stomach. The best time is in the morning before eating breakfast, but can be done before any meal. The used oil is discarded and the mouth rinsed out with water. The oil is never swallowed because it is loaded with bacteria, toxins, pus, and mucous.
Sunflower and sesame seed oils are the most commonly used for oil pulling, but any vegetable oil will work. People have had success with olive, coconut, almond, and other oils. I prefer to use coconut oil because of its many health benefits. If you use a mild flavored coconut oil it is very pleasant in the mouth. Some oils, such as extra virgin olive oil, are so strong flavored that many people find them difficult to use.
The oil acts like a cleanser. When you put it in your mouth and work it around your teeth and gums it “pulls” out bacteria and other debris. It acts much like the oil you put in your car engine. The oil picks up dirt and grime. When you drain the oil, it pulls out the dirt and grime with it, leaving the engine relatively clean. Consequently, the engine runs smoother and lasts longer. Likewise, when we expel harmful substances from our bodies our health is improved and we run smoother and last longer.
As simple as it is, oil pulling has a very powerful detoxifying effect. Our mouths are the home to billions of bacteria, viruses, fungi and other parasites and their toxins. Candida and Streptococcus are common residents in our mouths. It is these types of germs and their toxic waste products that cause gum disease and tooth decay and contribute to many other health problems including arthritis and heart disease. Our immune system is constantly fighting these troublemakers. If our immune system becomes overloaded or burdened by excessive stress, poor diet, environmental toxins and such, these organisms can spread throughout the body causing secondary infections and chronic inflammation, leading to any number of health problems.
Oil pulling is one of the most remarkable methods of detoxification and healing I have ever experienced in my career as a naturopathic physician. It helped me overcome a chronic skin problem that other forms of detoxification, including numerous juice fasts lasting up to 30 days, were unable to cure.
Oil pulling can work its magic almost instantly. Some people report relief from certain conditions after doing it only once. Minor problems often clear up within a few days. More serious, chronic problems may require a few weeks or several months or more depending on lifestyle issues.
Toxins are pulled from the body the very first time you try it. One of the first cleansing symptoms you will experience is an increased flow of mucous from your throat and sinuses. Mucous drainage is one of the body’s methods of removing toxins. While you are pulling, mucous may build in the back of your throat. You may even have to expel the oil and clear the mucous from your throat before reaching a full 20 minutes. That’s okay, take another spoonful of oil and continue until you’ve pulled for a total of 15-20 minutes. You may also experience a little nausea and perhaps even need to vomit as your body expels toxic waste. Other symptoms may also arise temporarily. These symptoms will subside as your body becomes cleaner and you become more comfortable with oil pulling. Unlike other methods of detoxification that last for only a short time, oil pulling should become a regular part of your daily schedule, like brushing your teeth.
Oil pulling is incredibly effective in brightening teeth, healing gums, preventing bad breath, quenching inflammation, and healing oral infections. It is also effective in treating many systemic conditions throughout the body.
As good as it is, the simple oil pulling method described in this article isn’t always enough. Some people and some conditions require a little extra care. For this reason, I took oil pulling and developed it into a more complete, more effective method that I call Oil Pulling Therapy. This program incorporates medicated coconut oil (which you can make yourself), diet, select nutrients, oral pH balancing procedures, and, for those who have amalgam (mercury) fillings or metal crowns, a detox procedure designed specifically for removing heavy metals, all of which combine to greatly enhance the effects and healing properties of oil pulling. The details of this program are covered in my new book Oil Pulling Therapy: Detoxifying and Healing the Body Through Oral Cleansing.
Oil pulling is cheap; the only expense is for the oil you use. It is very easy; you simply swish oil in your mouth. Compared to other forms of detoxification it is relatively effortless. It doesn’t require dieting, fasting, or consuming unpleasant, and often bowel loosening, mixes of herbs and pills. And it is completely harmless. All you are doing is rinsing your mouth out with vegetable oil—a food. You’re not even swallowing the oil. What can be more benign than that? Nearly anyone can do it, regardless of their level of health. If you have health issues, don’t let the simplicity of oil pulling deter you from trying it. Sometimes the simplest procedures produce the greatest results. ■
